Avenue Q: The Place You Live When You Can't Afford To Live Anyplace Else
MELBOURNE – JANUARY 2024: Melbourne based theatre company, AG THEATRE PRODUCTIONS, is kicking off its 2025 season with the laugh-out-loud Broadway smash hit AVENUE Q. The highly entertaining and irreverent R rated musical theatre show has firmly cemented itself in theatre history, throwing out politically correctness, as it hilariously tackles all kinds of taboo issues including racism, unemployment, homosexuality, love, and porn with its raucous Sesame Street like puppets. This ‘anti-musical’ redefines music theatre, as it tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighbourhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life. This revolutionary show garnered the coveted ‘triple crown’ at Tony Awards in 2004 winning Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book of a Musical, toppling the mega-production Wicked. The show is set to take over Melbourne’s historic, National Theatre in St Kilda from February 22nd.
This funny and irreverent show conveys life’s tough lessons through the trials and tribulations of Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, who is anxious to discover his purpose in life; but first, he must find an apartment and a job, with no work experience - just like the other characters living on Avenue Q! Filled with gut-busting humour and a delightfully catchy score, not to mention R-rated puppets, Avenue Q is a truly unique show that will leave audience’s rolling down the aisles with laughter.

Avenue Q will play at The National Theatre in St Kilda from Wednesday to Sunday until March 16, and is a must see for people who love all things inappropriate and a good laugh! The show has long been the darling of both Broadway and off-Broadway theatres, selling out to delighted audiences for an incredible 16 years consistently since its off-Broadway debut in 2003.
