MEDIA RELEASE

FEBRUARY 2024: The Cosmopolitan Hotel  has announced their inaugural International Women's Day Charity Lunch in Trentham on Friday 8th March 2024. The historic hotel will host a delicious three course lunch with free-flowing drinks from their event partner Shadowfax Wines and includes a delicious cocktail on arrival from the event’s drinks sponsor Big Tree Distillery. The event will also feature inspirational local guest speakers and live music from the Castlemaine Chamber Orchestra, as the local community comes together to celebrate International Women's Day 2024 and support local family violence services in the region. Proceeds from the day will be going to Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s Family Services and Housing Support programs who provide support to women and children experiencing family violence.

Owner Rod Hughes, said, “We are delighted to be hosting the very first International Women’s Day event here at The Cosmo! Women in this region continue to excel in all fields and are the backbone of the community in many aspects. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate International Women’s Day and also to highlight local services assisting women and children experiencing family violence in the region. I think it’s going to be a very special day which will allow local women to show their support for this very important cause - as well as allow them to enjoy all this wonderful event has to offer.”

The Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health family violence program is a confidential service that supports women experiencing violence and abuse from a partner, ex-partner or someone else they are close to. They offer a range of services including the Moving On support group, which assists women who are affected by hurtful relationships and family violence; the Men’s Behaviour Change program for men who have used intimate partner violence currently or historically and the Safe, Thriving and Connected, therapeutic family violence recovery program for victims and survivors of family violence. The organisation works closely with The Orange Door, a free service for adults, children and young people who are experiencing or have experienced family violence and families who need extra support with the care of children. The Centre for Non-Violence and the Centre Against Sexual Assault Victoria are both co-located at their Kyneton site. All of their family violence services are free and confidential.

Justine Maher, Manager Family Services & Housing – Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health said, “Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s Family Services and Housing Support Programs provide support to women and children experiencing family violence in the Macedon Ranges.  We work closely with specialist family and domestic violence services, such as the Centre for Non-Violence, to provide a holistic wrap-around service to help navigate this incredibly vulnerable time in people’s lives. The past few years have seen a significant increase in referrals to Family Services that include experiences of family violence which are impacting the safety and wellbeing of children as well as their mothers.  Practitioners work with the family using a trauma informed practice lens to address their specific needs and parenting strategies including safety planning, risk assessments, family decision making and referrals to other supports to help with healing and recovery.  Family Services and Housing work together to support the family along with other services.  Material aid is often required to help the mother and children in cases where they have left the family home and have no access to an income.  In these cases, community support in the form of monetary donations allows financial assistance to be provided as needed.”

The Cosmopolitan has long held a place in the heart of the local community. Built circa 1866, its sweeping weatherboard verandas have witnessed countless local stories and even a few ghosts! It’s the pub on the corner where your grandfather might have had his first lemonade, and his first beer, just as his father had done before him. In 2005 The Cosmopolitan story took an unexpected turn when fire ravaged the iconic pub. Owner Rod Hughes bought the pub in 2009 and has loving restored it, carving a place for the hotel in the Victorian food scene.
